This famous 1514 work by Quentin Metsys is exhibited at the Louvre. On first take, it is a genre painting of a banker and his wife. We see their clients in the reflection of the mirror. There are many signs of wealth: gold, pearls, jewellery. On closer look at the details – the Virgin on the Book of Hours, the blown out candle, the rosary, the scales – we understand the moral character of the work. It denounces greed and calls for Christian moderation.
