Kandinsky painted this work in 1936. He was , 70 and, after Russia and Germany, was living in Paris. He painted 10 ‘Compositions’ – large-format abstract paintings which spoke ‘by the spirit to the spirit’. This one is unique for its use of great diagonals and soft colours. Kandinsky also introduced non-geometric forms, called biomorphs, which resemble living organisms.
