Edgar Degas was born in 1834 in Paris. He was actively involved in Impressionism, although he had a different style. He mainly painted figures and a few landscapes. Around 1867, he started going to the Opera Garnier inaugurated in 1875 and began painting numerous ballet and dance scenes. He is known as the ‘painter of dancers’. In this painting, Degas captures the moment the lesson has just finished. Female dancers stretch out and put their ribbons back on. The perspective and depth of the room are enhanced by the prevalence Degas gives to the parquet floor which occupies a quarter of the room!
