In 1880 Monet stayed at Lavacourt, on the Parisian outskirts. This scene shows a frozen Seine during a very harsh winter. Monet depicted the famous sun which gave Impressionism its name. The village is barely sketched in. Monet’s brushwork is thicker for the ice over the Seine, and lighter for the fog in the skies.
