In 1870, Claude Monet and his family spent the summer in Trouville - a sea station popular during the Second Empire. There, Monet reunited with friend and fellow artist Eugène Boudin, well known for his beach scenes with big blue skies. Unlike Boudin, the younger Monet paid particular attention to the effects of light. The Impressionist movement was born a few years later.
