A member of the Giverny group, Richard E. Miller is a leading figure in American Impressionism. Monet's influence shines through in this painting from the early 1910s, both in the subject matter and the style of rapid brushstrokes used. The decorative aspect of the work reflects the painter's belief that art should above all provide a pleasing visual experience.

Although this puzzle appears to be largely green in color, the palette is a good deal richer than it might seem at first glance. The pieces are cut to follow the contours of the subject figure, accentuating its presence in the heart of the landscape. This painting is part of the Minneapolis Institute of Art's collection.
