This trompe-l'Ïil painting was created in the 17th century by a Flemish painter working in Italy. It shows a cabinet of curiosities, a type of collecting that was very much in vogue at the time, when enthusiasts gathered together extraordinary objects from the animal, plant and mineral worlds to create their own personal exhibition.
