Daniel Ridgway Knight was an American naturalist painter, born in 1839 in Philadelphia and deceased in 1924 in Neuilly-sur-Seine. He studied painting at the Beaux Arts de Paris and met realist painter Jean-Francois Millet in Barbizon. Contrary to Millet who painted the hardship of peasant life, Ridway Knight preferred scenes of everyday joy, like in this work typical of his style.
