Hasui Kawase (1883-1957) is a Japanese painter and illustrator who belonged to the Shin-Hanga, or pictorial revival, movement. The artist offers us a view of Itsukushima, a sanctuary on the Japanese island of Miyajima, world famous for its Torii, a great sacred gate built in the water. At high tide, it looks as if the structure floats!
