Gustave Caillebotte, a passionate gardener, developed his interest in all things floral in 1880. This painting, dated to 1893, represents the chrysanthemum in his estate at Petit-Gennevilliers. It was intended as dining room decoration. Entitled 'Chrysanthemum in the garden of Petit-Gennevilliers', it is part of the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
