Hasui Kawase (1883-1957) was a Japanese painter and illustrator who belonged to the Shin-Hanga, or pictorial revival movement. This print represents the sanctuary of Kasuga Taisha situated in the city of Nara, near Kyoto. The rain gives the scene a calm, soothing atmosphere which incites contemplation.
