Son of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Pieter Bruegel the Younger was born in Brussels in 1564. He was nicknamed Brueghel from Hell because of his favoured subjects. This satirical painting, known under different titles (The Payment of the Tithes, The Country Lawyer, The Peasant Lawyer) represents naive peasants confronted by greedy lawyers. It exists in no less than 19 versions.
