Ernst Haeckel was a XIX century German doctor, biologist, zoologist and humanist artist. A follower of Darwin, he coined the term "ecology", to describe the relationship between the body and its environment. He did more than a thousand illustrations to show the close parallels between art and nature. In "The Hummingbirds", he depicted twelve out of the 340 known species of hummingbirds, distinguished by their shapes and colors.
