17th century Flemish painter, Jan Wildens, is renowned for his detailed landscapes and his joint work with his contemporary, Rubens. This work named January, Skating on the Frozen River is the first of a series of twelve paintings portraying the months of the year. This scene depicts a snowy plain crossed by a frozen river, brought to life by a range of skaters and villagers. This painting is part of the collection put together by the Musei della Strada Nuova in Genoa, Italy.
