Leopold von Stoll (1808Ð1889) was a Dutch painter best known for his still lifes of flowers and fruit. Active in the 19th century, he lived in several European cities, including Krakow, Warsaw, Vienna, and Saint Petersburg, where he was a flower painter at the Imperial Botanical Garden. His paintings are exhibited at the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg and the Belvedere Gallery in Vienna.

Even as you first lay eyes on the pieces still all mixed together, you will already appreciate the magnificent palette of colors that make up this painting. You might get started by reconstructing the white cockatoo, whose bright plumage contrasts with the colorful fruits and leaves in the scene. This elegant bird, trying to catch a grape, breathes a lively dynamic into the composition.
