Paul Cezanne was born in Aix en Provence. He painted this work in 1878 in L’Estaque near Marseille. He liked the strong light of the South of France, which accentuates contrasts and sharpens the outline of shapes. In this painting, he depicted the sea, the village, but also a factory. It was the beginning of the industrial age. Cezanne said about the painting: ´It is like a playing card... red roofs on a blue sea’.
